High-ranking, highly paid leaders are not more intelligent than you or me. They simply see patterns of human behavior that others fail to notice. Consequently, they earn more money than most people. Pattern recognition is an easy skill to develop. Sage offers the Sage Learning Method, a proven way business leaders can use to achieve peak performance from their teams by accessing higher dimensions of peak experiences.

When Steve Jobs (Apple) accepted his mortality, he suddenly realized  that people wanted a pocket-size computer, the smart phone that would seal his legacy. Through deep personal connections Jenssen Huang (Nvidia) noticed how people needed larger chips to gain access to AI. Julie Sweet (Accenture) saw that most people needed assistance with ever-changing technology and business strategies. None of them worked harder than regular executives, engineers, or consultants. Yet they created greater value and  earned more by many orders of magnitude.

Superior athletes and the very finest business leaders access timeless perception in the heat of the game. You can enjoy such synergy and euphoria by organizing a series of challenges that lift your teams into increasing states of perceptiveness that go with superior execution.

Winning the Innovation Revolution requires more than good planning and hard work. Repetition and habituation distort perceptions. Tradition provides strong roots, but too much reliance on ‘business-as-usual’ blinds companies to the brilliant flash that produces paradigm shifts in major industries.

Ballet, circus performances or high level sporting events can illustrate this principle better than words. At Sage we are enthusiastic fans of basketball and European football, where we love the game as much for strategy as for the unexpected outcomes that go with championship play. We will use a sports metaphor to illustrate the principle.

Bill Russell won 11 championship rings as a NBA superstar – more than anyone else who ever played the game. His influence on the court lifted teammates and opponents alike to unimaginable levels. Often he played a dual role as a player/coach. He described his perspective on leadership in his book, Second Wind, which describes the sense of oneness that great leaders share with their teams:

Every so often a Celtic game would heat up so that it became more than a physical or even a mental game, and would be magical. That feeling is very difficult to describe, and I certainly never talked about it when I was playing. When it happened, I could feel my play rise to a new level. It came rarely, and would last anywhere from 5 minutes to a whole quarter or more…. It would surround not only me and the other Celtics, but also the players on the other team, even the referees.

At that special level, all sorts of odd things happened. The game would be in a white heat of competition, and yet somehow I wouldn't feel competitive–which is a miracle in itself. I’d be putting out the maximum effort, straining, coughing up parts of my lungs as we ran, and yet I never felt the pain. The game would move so quickly that every fake, cut and pass would be surprising and yet nothing could surprise me. It was almost as if we were playing in slow motion. During those spells, I could almost sense how the next play would develop and where the next shot would be taken….My premonitions would be consistently correct, and I always felt then that I not only knew all of the Celtics by heart, but also all the opposing players, and that they all knew me. There have been many times in my career when I felt moved or joyful, but these were the moments when I had chills pulsing up and down my spine. - Bill Russell
